National Information Centre

Welcome

WELCOME NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR GENERAL

Dear Visitor,

thank you for your interest in the National Information Centre (NIK). I trust the information on our website offers proper guidance about the activities and role of this organisation in the Hungarian national security and law enforcement community.

As provided in the applicable legislation, NIK is one of Hungary’s national security services. I firmly believe that the effectiveness of an organization transcends mere legal authority and its expenditure of public money; instead, it pivots on its people. These professionals play a key role in the mission of NIK, given that its primary responsibility since its establishment on 25 May 2022 has been to provide professional support to the Government. In the context of NIK, this holds particular significance, as since its inception on 25 May 2022, its principal mandate has been to provide professional decision support to the Government.

To achieve that goal, it is imperative for NIK to have on board highly trained professionals with excellent analytical skills to process the array of available information objectively and professionally. This duty represents a major challenge and responsibility, demanding dedication and continuous development, both at the organisational and individual levels.

The Centre extends informational support not just to the Government but also to collaborating organizations, facilitating inter-agency coordination or the management of certain key issues and the mitigation of security risks. Numerous risk analyses contribute to crime detection and the smooth execution of events demanding heightened security preparedness.

Empowered by law, NIK possesses exceptional authority to execute its duties effectively, with expansive access to data and the right to request obligated bodies to procure information. While NIK refrains from gathering classified information directly—except for safeguarding its personnel—it heavily relies on the effective collaboration with Hungarian national security and law enforcement agencies for the fulfilment of its core responsibilities.
